About Us - Company History

Our story begins with the vision of Richard P. Morrissey, his wife Dolores A. Morrissey and his parents Frieda and Vincent Morrissey. Together they founded the company in 1955 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Rich Mar Florist first opened its doors that year in the basement of a townhouse on Gordon Street, but that was only the beginning of the story.

In the years to come Rich Mar Florist would expand to our most remembered and most popular location at 4th & Tilghman Streets in Allentown. During the late 1970’s Richard’s Son Richard J. Morrissey entered the business and became the head designer and manager of the 4th & Tilghman Street store. The 70’s was a good time for Rich Mar Florist: our expansion reached all over the area from The Berkshire Mall, Gilbertsville, Village West, Broad Street in Bethlehem and Center-City Easton. The wave of expansion continued into the 1980’s and would help shape the current face of Rich Mar Florist as it is known today. In 1981, Richard J. married Frances M. Martin and she too joined the business to work alongside her husband.

In 1987 Rich Mar converted an old TV repair shop into the beautiful location it is today at 2407 Easton Avenue in Bethlehem. The following year, we moved a few blocks down to 17th & Tilghman in Allentown – the old Shane’s building. Over time, these two locations became our busiest and during the 90’s would become our only, flagship locations. In 1989 we opened our “Design Center” in Allentown, where we take all of the phone orders and make the beautiful arrangements we deliver to our customers everyday.

The vision of Richard and Vincent is alive and well with their family. In 2003, Richard J.’s son Jonathan entered the business upon his college graduation, marking the 4th generation of Morrissey’s to enter into and operate Rich Mar Florist. Rich Mar has always been a family business with the intent of giving back to the community that has made us who we are. We have grown from our basement to the Internet and plan to keep our family vision alive and well for another 50 years.
